IRLA REading LEVels & skills
REading
Our first unit in Reading will be "Building Good Reading Habits". We will be reviewing skills from Kindergarten, learning what read to self and partner reading look like and sound like, familiarizing ourselves with our classroom library and testing out new reading strategies.
Phonics
We will begin our first Phonics unit "Talking and Thinking About Letters" on the very first day of school. We will begin with a name study and meet our class mascot Rasheed. We will review letter names and sounds as well as the "snap words" that we learned in Kindergarten. We will add new words to our word wall and learn strategies for turning new words into snap words.
Writing
Small Moments is our first writing unit of first grade. First graders will learn to write about one small moment from their own life and experience. The goal is help them focus on the seed not the whole watermelon :-) Students will write many stories during this unit and chose their favorite to "publish" on the writing bulletin board in our classroom.

PBIS: Positive Behavior Intervention Support
As a staff, we are committed to encouraging and reinforcing positive behavior choices. Students can receive "Pride Paws" on a daily basis. They earn a "Pride Paw" when they are "caught" being safe, respectful, or responsible by any staff member. The staff member then tells your child why they are receiving the "Pride Paw." In addition, your child will have a carbon copy of it to take home, so please be sure to praise them! Please read in more detail the information regarding PBIS in the Parent/Student Handbook that will be sent home in your child's First Day Packet. We are looking forward to another year where all kids are recognized and encouraged. We appreciate your support at home, as always!

In order to ensure your child’s safety, ALL parents, volunteers, and visitors must enter the building through the front doors, sign in, and wear identification in the building. We also ask that you honor the integrity of our instructional program by prearranging for volunteer activities, observations, and/or visits to the classroom. We are very excited for you to become a part of our school community.
Dismissal Time
Dismissal time is a challenge because we are releasing all 600+ McKinley students at the same time. Classroom teachers do a great job of keeping track of their students' going home methods, as well as escorting their classes to the various means of dismissal, i.e. busses or parent pick up. Please note that parent pick up happens one of two ways. You may either collect your child by driving through the pick up lane or by waiting for your child in the designated Parent Pick Up area in the cafeteria. Please note, for safety reasons we don’t allow parents/siblings to gather in the hallway by the playground doors.
Going Home Plans for Your Child
If you would like your child to go home after school a different way than usual, please email or write a note to your child’s teacher and send it with your child in the morning. However, we understand that emergencies do happen. If you do need to call in a change in after school plans, please note that we cannot guarantee that we can notify your child’s teacher of a change in going home plans if you call after 2:30 pm. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
Parking Lot
If you drop off or pick up your child from school, please park in a designated parking space. Please don't make your own space. If there are none available, use the parking lot across the street. We know this can be inconvenient, and we apologize. The safety of our families is very important to us. Parking in non-designated areas creates blind spots for our buses and other drivers. When pulling into the drive through lane, please make sure that no part or your vehicle is blocking 185th. This is extremely dangerous and could result in an accident, a fine, or a ticket. Please remember that if you are stopped in the pick up lane, you must remain in your vehicle and that there is no double parking in the drive through lane.
